Vehicle Registration Matching
One of my most frequent data analysis tasks is to take vehicle registration data, and using specially developed matching software, to create Origin-Destination Matrices, Journey Time Summaries, and Car Park Occupancy and Duration of Stay Reports.
GPS Journey Analysis
I have developed software that allows me to take GPS track data in various formats and analyse it in conjunction with the waypoints of routes you are interested in. This process yields summary data about the routes, which are easy to understand and use in other applications.
Metrics include real times, elapsed times and instantanious speed at each waypoint along the routes. They can also include average speeds, queueing information and timing delays at control points.
Microsoft Office Macros
I can implement macros quickly for Microsoft Excel and Word, to assist with your company workflow, such as processing data and automating formatting tasks.
If you think I may be able to help, give me a quick ring and I'll tell you whether your task is feasible using macros.
Custom Software/System Development
I can develop specialist software/hardware to help with complex data analysis.
My Turning Count/Link Flow Studio is some such software. It allows count data to be viewed, edited and balanced graphically.
TallyPhone - Manual Traffic Counters
Using TallyPhone is an affordable but modern approach to conducting manual enumeration tasks in the field.
The software runs on low-cost mobile phones, which connect to a PCs USB port to transfer the recorded data in Excel format.
Our data solutions cost from as little as £800 per year.
we can provide the phones for £50 each.
Bluetooth Survey Systems
I am putting the finishing touches to, and trialling my new Bluetooth detection and tracking devices.
This technology will provide a cheap and reliable means of conducting journey time and origin-destination surveys.

DataDevil - Making Work for Idle Hands!
I am currently developing a web-based enumeration system that will provide video data collection companies with the option to outsource some, or potentially all of their video enumeration work.
This approach allows money to be saved on staffing costs, as the work is available to the massive global labour market. It also saves on costs associated with office equipment, heating, space and payroll.
As this is quite a large project, I would be very interested in industry partnership for this work. Please contact me if you would like to propose a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Free Vehicle Registration Data Cleanser
Registration data obtained from either ANPR or a manual transcription process frequently contain errors that make matching processes more difficult or potentially inaccurate.
Because I often found myself presented with this situation in the course of undertaking origin-destination, journey time, and duration of stay analysis, I wrote some simple, but effective software for checking and improving data sets.
I make it freely available as an online service here, in the hope that by helping potential clients, they may consider me when commissioning other work.
It works by looking at all the registrations and checking for plates that only differ from each other by one character. It then creates a character substitution matrix, which is employed to assess the likelyhood that each plate is correct, and if necessary performs appropriate corrections.

Instructions for use
Paste your full dataset into the textarea below.
The input format must look like this:
Registration, Time, Class, Site, Direction
FR51ABC, 10:52:16, 1, A, N
Either comma or tab separation will work ok, so pasting from Excel should be fine.
You may also want to adjust the other parameters if necessary. The higher the correction level, the more data is adjusted.
The checking and cleaning process may take up to a couple of minutes depending on the size of your data set, and how many others are using the server.
Andy Betsworth trading as DataDevil
Since graduating with a BSc in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Lancaster University in 1999, I have been working for myself, developing my expertise in many areas of IT, particularly relating to the traffic data collection industry.
I moved to Preston in 2001 where I found more demand for my skills, and over the next few years, helped an embryonic business (CTS Traffic & Transportation) grow into a well established traffic survey company with a nationwide client base, employing 11 full-time staff, and with a database of over one thousand casual employees.
My work in Lancashire has also involved other traffic related clients including Lancashire County Council's Environment Directorate.
I returned to Cumbria in 2010, where I live with my wife Lona and young son Tom.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing the guitar and writing music.
