Many of our
solutions
involve a
database which
stores
information
relating to your
business.
There are
various factors
to be considered
when deciding
which database
should be used.
These include
the cost of
licensing and
maintenance,
speed,
flexibility and
the demands
likely to be
placed upon it.
We feel that
Microsoft
Access,
Microsoft SQL
Server and
PostgreSQL are
the most
appropriate
databases for
small business
applications,
and the
following
summarises the
strengths and
weaknesses of
each.
|
|
|
Microsoft Access |
|
Since this
is shipped is
part of
Microsoft
Office, there
are usually no
additional
software costs involved,
and it is
usually easy and
quick for us to
setup databases
for up to three
simultaneous
users.
Access databases
are generally
not appropriate
where there is a
large amount of
data involved
and several
users need
access to it
from across a
network.
Data analysis
using access is
straightforward
and we have a
lot of
experience in
this area. |

Microsoft SQL |
|
This is a fast
and popular
database
which can scale
to support
hundreds of
users and a very
large amount of
data. It
can be an
expensive option
for some small
businesses with
limited IT
budgets,
typically
costing £1100
for 5 users and
£1500 for 10,
and there may be
additional costs
involved. |

|
PostgreSQL |
A fast database
which can scale
to supports
hundreds of
users and
large amounts of
data.
There are no
licensing costs
involved because PostgreSQL is a
free, open
source database
(based on the
same model as
Linux).
There are
currently fewer
trained experts
than in Access and
Microsoft SQL,
so it is
possible that
support may cost
more.
-
DataDevil will
always charge
the same
hourly rate
for supporting
Microsoft SQL
and PostgreSQL
databases and
work for
existing
clients is
given priority
over new
business.

|
As your business
evolves, you may
wish to move
from an Access database
to a faster and
more scaleable
solution.
Where possible,
we will build
your software with
this in mind and
ensure
when the time
comes to change, there is a
quick and seamless
transition. |
Before we embark
on any
development
project, we will
discuss your
database options, and
help you make
the best choice
for your
business.
